NORTHWEST HIGH SCHOOL AGRICULTURE

WELCOME!

I would like to welcome everyone to the start of a new school year.  My name is Nathan Martin, and I will be teaching your student’s Agriculture class.  I am looking forward to working with your student.  I will strive to help each student have a successful year reaching his or her potential.

It is important that we keep the lines of communication open.  I will do my best to keep you informed on your student’s progress and upcoming events.  Please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss your child or have any questions or concerns.  Below you can find my personal contact information.  Parent involvement is an important factor of a successful school year.

As well as being in an Agriculture class, your student is also a member of FFA. FFA is not mandatory for students to participate in but is highly encouraged as students will be able to take classroom standards and apply them in hands on competitions. Students may sign up to participate in FFA competition such as Dairy Judging, Poultry Judging, Soils Judging, and many other competitions.  The organization will also have other events such as volunteer road cleanings, participating in the Christmas Parade, and other social gatherings.  Please encourage your student to join us after school for the first chapter meeting on August 20. This meeting will last until approximately 3:30 and students will need to arrange for a parent pick up.

I look forward to working with your student this year and feel free to reach out at any time with questions or concerns. My email ([email protected]) is the best method of contact and I check my email frequently throughout the week.

Your final grade will be determined by a total points system.  All points earned during a nine-week period will be calculated and divided by the total points possible.  Any cheating will result in an automatic zero for that assignment.

Late Work

Work is accepted up to THREE days late.  After three days the student will receive a zero for that assignment.

Make Up Work

It is the responsibility of the student to get make up work before or after class.  Make up work is to be turned in upon completion.  Each student will be allowed the same number of days he/she was absent to complete the assignment for full credit.

SAE (supervised agriculture experience)

Every student must work on and keep a record of an SAE.  The SAE will be used for semester exam grades.  An SAE is any agriculture related activity that students do outside of the classroom.  I am here to assist and help monitor students SAE.  There will be multiple opportunities for students to stay after school and work on an SAE.  FFA also provides many chances to develop SAEs.

Required Materials

  • Supply of notebook paper
  • Folder kept in classroom
  • Writing utensils

Outdoor Participation

This class has many lessons in the shop setting or outdoors. Students will be working with power equipment in the school greenhouse/garden along with servicing engines in the Ag shop. They will be subject to getting dirty during some lessons but will be given the opportunity to leave extra shoes and clothes in Ag Shop lockers. Failure to participate in shop/outdoor activities will result in a zero percent score.  If your students is unable to participate for medical reasons an alternative assignment will be offered.
